Basic Pop Cultural Knowledge Needed

As I was walking along the beach with my friends tonight, my friend turned to me and asked if I liked "Hot Dog Cheesy Pepsi." (Sounded like "hotch-doggy-cheesy-pepsi".)

"Do I like WHAT?" I asked.

"Hot dog cheesy pepsi!"

-silence-

Finally, between giggles, they translated for me: "Red Hot Chili Peppers!!"

Welcome to my life. :)

Feliz Ano Novo, Cris! Glad to hear that your Portuguese is going so well. About that lizard, you probably missed an opportunity to document a rare, previously unknown, species.

I'll share my own funny cross-cultural communication story: our assistant case manager was talking to some Somali clients, and she said "did you guys get any gifts for Christmas?" They couldn't understand what she was asking, so she rephrased and said "you know, presents. Did you get any presents?" They smiled and said "oh yes. We are for Obama!"
